Martin Orford (ex-IQ). Знаковые фрагменты недавнего интервью.

1. Did you have classical training and or are you self-taught?
Playing the piano was always something that I could do, and when my parents bought a piano when I was eight years old, I pretty much knew what to do with it right away. I did have lessons with the old lady that played the church organ in our village, but as she was a bit of an old hippy (before hippies existed!) the lessons would often go off at a tangent. And I spent most of my school years playing the flute because no-one thought my keyboard playing was any good.

2. Where did that interest in music come from? Do you recall when you actually realized: this is my call, I want to play music?!
My parents used to have an old Russ Conway record (he was a popular British honky-tonk-style pianist) that they used to play to me when I was very young. I guess that did it.

3. Now that you have announced quitting the music business all together, looking back, what do you feel were your proudest moment?
There were several proud moments over the years, but playing Parkpop (in Holland) with John Wetton was a big thrill because it was such a huge festival. Also with John we did a gig in a village hall once with Steve Hackett on guest guitar and (the now legendary) Thomas Lang on drums. I'd say that was a pretty good band. IQ did their share of festivals too and the "Out In The Green" series in Germany and Switzerland in the mid 80s was particularly memorable.

4. As a keyboard wizard, how are your thoughts on: Mellotron, the sound, the instrument ?
Dreadful old things that hardly ever worked properly. But the recordings used on the tape sets were genius and have never been bettered. So the smart thing to do is to use a modern re-creation (there are plenty of good software plug-ins that do the job) to access those superb and atmospheric sounds.

5. What´s your opinion on the term NEO PROG?
It's a totally fake term invented by Americans about 15 years after it all happened. I don't trust genre classifications made up by people who weren't there, therefore I don't recognize the term Neo Prog.
For those of us who WERE there, it was called the New Wave of British Progressive Rock at the time, but all these years later I don't see why everything can't all go under the Progressive or Prog banner. The musicians from the various ages of prog rock don't acknowledge the difference, so why should anyone else?

6. What are your plans for the future?
To get a job that doesn't in any way involve music or the Internet! I plan to spend a lot of time on my local steam railway helping to operate their magnificent fleet of steam engines.

7. Please feel free to state your final (not meant to be that dramatic) words?
To music fans in general: "You used to be such nice people; what happened"?

Интересно, чего его так бесит термин "нео"? Ведь классификацию придумывают чаще не музыканты, а критики и слушатели для удобства. Никто ж не отбирает у него права быть велким (с нео или без нео - не важно).ИМХО
P.S.Ведь придумали ж его соратники проект NEO...

Я бы не сказал, что бесит. Скорее - вызывает определённое раздражение. Правда, что характер у Орфорда - далеко не сахарный.

Как же он вытерпел проект НЕО со своими друзьями? Это что, уже мания величия - типа, мы классики классического прога, а не какого-то ответвления? По-моему глупо - тем более (повторюсь), что классификацию проводят критики и слушатели для УДОБСТВА....
Почему-то участников Саги (а засветились они раньше) не бесит, что на официальном сайте их музыку классифицировали, как нео-прог.

Странный подход. А что же, интересно, Орфорд должен был сделать? Запретить название группы или выгнать Джоуита и Эдвардса из IQ? Кстати. Слова Орфорда ("For those of us who WERE there, it was called the New Wave of British Progressive Rock at the time") имеют очевидный смысл. Здесь нет попытки "примазаться" к первопроходцам жанра, а лишь констатация факта - Новая Волна Британского Прог Рока стала логическим продолжением музыки, которая оформилась ещё в начале семидесятых...

Clive Nolan's statement about Arena.

After working hard with Arena for about ten years, both Mick and I felt it was time to take a break. We both had things we wanted to do, and while it was easier for other band members to go off and play with other projects, we were kind of 'strapped to the mast'. So, after 'Pepper's Ghost', it was time to put things on ice for a while.

Naturally, when breaks like this happen, everyone fills the gaps with other things, so it becomes harder to gather everyone together again. However, we are all now ready to move forward with Arena.

So:
Has Arena split up? No, not at all!
Are there plans for Arena to do anything new? Yes
When will there be a new album? That is impossible to answer right now. It depends on how fast we write the album.

Mick and I had a short meeting before he went off on tour with the 'Script', and we agreed that we would meet again (after the Shadowland tour and some Caamora dates..;), and start writing this elusive seventh album!
We do have a few bits of material already, and I have a concept and a title, so things have already started. It's just a matter of regaining the time we need.

I can tell you that the next album will be pretty dark (no surprises there!), and deals with some awkward themes.
You want something exclusive?...ok..... The next Arena album will be called....The Tinder Box
I hope that answers a few questions

Конечно. Но мы свободные люди и тоже можем иметь своё мнение. С Ноланом мне доводилось неоднократно общаться и я ему сказал, что жду от него музыки в ключе Иммортал.... Он сказал, что понимает меня... но время течёт и всё меняется, в т.ч. и музыка. Но главное, что он не сказал, что решение принимать не мне... Я думаю (и уверен), что музыкантам не безразлично мнение поклонников.

MH: You've been working with Chris Squire of Yes on a project codenamed Squackett - how's that coming along?

Steve: It's incredibly exciting. I'll be visiting the States soon to work with him and meet some guys who should be on the album.

MH: Are there any new bands or musicians that have caught your attention recently?

Steve: I think Elbow does some interesting stuff. Magenta is a fine band and Joe Bonamassa is a sharp axeman.

MH: I'm sure everyone asks you this... There are always rumours of a 5-man Genesis reunion and no-one seems to rule it out completely. Is there any glimmer of hope on the horizons? (sic)

Steve: I love the work we did in Genesis way back when. The guys can always count on me for a reunion. Meanwhile I already honour the Genesis song book by currently playing several of the more guitar oriented tunes in the live shows.

MH: If I can put you on the spot and ask you to pick the three albums you're most proud of, which would they be?

Steve: Selling England by the Pound is my favourite Genesis album - I felt my playing came into its own when we were combining disparate influences such as fusion, folk and electric mayhem all on one record. I've always had a soft spot for "Spectral Mornings" as that was the first album from my own band, which I felt had a unique atmosphere. The album I'm currently working on particularly excites me because it combines not just standard rock instrumentation, but also Chapman Stick, gypsy violin, electric sitar, soprano sax, alto flute and the female voice of Amanda Lehmann... Plus the production sounds of Roger King have to be heard to be believed!

Вопрос: Isn't it a honour for you as a bass guitarist to play with such great bands as IQ, Jadis, Arena and so on?

Ответ: Martin Orford called me to ask if I'd be intersting in joining IQ, to which I was more than chuffed to say yes. My first gig with the band was in June 1991 at the Marquee in London... I left Jadis because I wanted to be more involved in songwriting. Gary Chandler writes all. That works brilliantly for them, but I get frustrated if I can't write anything. (In fact I probably wrote about 20 % of the Subterranea, for example)... I saw the first Arena gig in Rotherham and was impressed. They found out how I felt through a matual friend, needed a bass player, and the rest is the rest...

Вопрос: Whos' your favourite bass player?

Ответ: My first hero was Chris Squire. John Wetton's great too, and a lovely bloke. Others include Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle) and Les Claypool (primus). The best though has to be Jaco Pastorius.

Ответ: Not many. I like to get lost in a good book. I like socialising with friends. And I love messing about with computer. Another two loves are history and architecture.

JT: How did you get involved in music?

KW: I was in a kind of musical kindergarten at the age of 5, started guitar lesson at 8, and violin at 11. As a kid, I always listened to any styles of music. But the more I liked the guitar, the more I got into this Rock thing.

JT: When did you decide you wanted to become a guitarist and join a band?

KW: I started playing in my first band at the age of 11, when I got my first electric guitar. Then I played lots of local bands until I recorded my first CD with Violet District in 1992. It was always my dream to become a musician, but at this time I decided to do it.

JT: What's your take on Pink Floyd and Dave Gilmour? Were they among your heroes?

KW: I had no special heroes and idols but there are many great musicians and especially David Gilmour is one of them. I like his melodies and his “tone” on the guitar.


JT. Tell me about any "significant" influences.

KW: Lots of Metal stuff. I grew up in the 80s with Metallica, Iron Maiden, and all of those heavy metal bands. And I still like the rock sound in any kind.

JT: How did you come up with the name of your side-project, Blind Ego?

KW: RPWL was, is and will be my No. 1 band. So I did this side-project just for my “ego” . But it’s quite different to write alone or together with a band because you don’t have to make any compromises. But certainly you miss other influences and so a solo project has many advantages and disadvantages. This is what “blind” means.

question: ASIA is one of the most interesting bands in the history of rock music. Many people either love Asia or can't stand it. What do you think is the reason for this?

JW: I think some people are prejudiced, and do not listen with an open mind... we are all guilty of this to a greater or lesser degree, but I think Asia is expected to be something which it is not. What it is, is primarily a song-oriented group, who happen to be able to sing and play fairly proficiently. That is what we have always been from the outset.

question: Do you think the audience's varying tastes in different countries or continents prompt the band to approach them differently? For example do you change your set list for different countries or continents?

JW: No, it's the same everywhere. The audience reaction is similar wherever we are.

question: Besides your vocals, your bass playing is quite unique too. Has the bass always been your instrument of choice? If not, how did that transition come about?

JW: Bass has never been my instrument of choice. My primary instrument is piano. I learned the beauty of the bass' role in the full picture of melody and harmony. I'm a singer/songwriter, and bass is just something I do while singing. If you ask me who was the best bass player ever, I will tell you Johann Sebastian Bach. :)

question: When listening to music, do you find yourself focusing in on the bass lines? Do you find yourself influenced by other bassists?

JW: No, I can appreciate listening to great bass-players, like Jack Bruce, or Paul McCartney, but they will always be doing something with the big picture.

question: Among the new rock bands and artists, or let´s not categorize it, among the new musicians, is there a band or artist that you like? And what are you currently listening to?

JW: I listen to a lot of contemporary music. There's lots of good stuff out there. I don't listen at home, it's mainly stuff I'm working on or classical, but I'm always listening to new stuff...

Billy comes from a family of musicians: His father is a composer, actor and big-band leader Bobby Sherwood who worked with legends like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Judy Garland; his mother is Phyllis Sherwood who played vibes and sang in Bobby’s band. Billy's brother is Michael Sherwood, a composer, singer and keyboard player and a highly sought after session musician in LA.

Question: You play almost every instrument but how did you start playing drums? I read that your mom was playing drums. Was it her who gave you your fist drum lessons?

BS: My mother was a drummer, also plays amazing vibes too (laughs)... She taught me how to use the kit.

question: You were also a member of the legendary prog rock band YES. Do you remember how you felt like the very first time you got in the same room with the band to practice?

BS: The first time I got in the room to practice for a tour wtih YES I had already known and worked intensely with them. I was defacto YES since 89, by the time I joined as a full member in 1996 the "holy cow look who I'm playing with" factor had worn off (laughs). It was an honor to play in YES. I recently added up all the shows I played and I came to 310 or something like it...

question: How was the YES fans' reaction toward you when you were with the band?

BS: Some fans were very warm and welcoming whilst others were more protective and less then welcoming... Some didn't understand the history with me and YES and assumed I won the contest to "play with Yes" on stage (laughs)... In reality I was embedded into the situation by YES themselves many moons previous to my joining. My goal was to keep YES moving forward and with growth rather then a sense of nostalgia, I fought long and hard to keep it on that path, good, bad or indifferent I was in the band I loved and was highly motivated to make it once again successful. Relatively speaking it was.

question: Who are your musical influences?

BS: I have so many influences and that list keeps growing... My personal favorites are Weather Report, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant and of course YES. Another huge inspiration to me is Antonio Carlos Jobim, his chords and melodies are so beautiful and haunting. My father turned me onto him when I was very young, at the time I didn't fully get it... later I did, thanks Dad (smiles).

question: What are you currently listening to?

BS: As for new music, there is a band called Paramore that are really good. Strange as this may sound, I don't listen to a lot of music in my off hours. I work so much on music all day that when I finish I just want to disconnect from chords and rhythms all together, hence video gaming junkie (laughs).

Question: That interesting bandname, how did that come about and what does it mean or let me rephrase that...obviously it means Darwin´s Radio....but why ?

MW: The name comes from the book by SF author Greg Bear which I was in the middle of reading when we were discussing band names. I liked the overall theme of the book, which suggests that the next stage in human evolution is just round the corner, and I equated it to the band in that it was an evolutionary step in our musical careers.

Question: Mindgames is described to be a melodic, symphonic and progressive rock band, what do you think about that, and can you tell a bit about your style and influences?

Bart: I think it’s a good description. But I was surprised that since the release of “Actors in a Play”, many reviewers have begun to describe us as Neo-prog. You can find most of our influences in the Progressive rock of the 70’s era: Genesis, Yes, Van Der Graaf Generator, Jethro Tull to mention but a few... Of the newer generation of bands I know Spock’s Beard and Porcupine Tree, but I am not influenced by them.

Question: Can you tell about your cover artwork for "Actors In A Play", and is it a connection between the title and the artwork?
Tom: Yes, Actors In A Play is about the different characters and individuals you meet, or about some archetypes. The front cover has different symbolic aspects refering to this concept: the hand behind the curtain, explicitly taking a king, a man standing in front of it and giving no reaction, or maybe he’s standing behind it all and he doesn’t know what’s happening behind him, the changing powers,... All other images, the girl with the balloons, the two hands before a face, the clockwork,... they all are refering to this common theme. Those images repeat themselves in the booklet.

Question: Is it a special story behind your band name?
Bart: Mindgames has a double meaning. On one hand it refers to the games, brain breakers and riddles. One the other hand it is also “playing with someone’s thoughts, with someone’s mind” e.q. changing the plot, creating unexpected changes, to anticipate on expectation, etc. This last one fits our musical style. It’s true, you could give our name a specific meaning while listening to our songs. But the name does not determine our style or our way of composing and playing.
